Why OET Matters

What Is OET and Why Is It the Right Choice for Kerala Healthcare Professionals?

The Occupational English Test is not a general English exam — and that distinction changes everything about how you should prepare.

Every year, thousands of nurses, doctors, dentists, and physiotherapists from Kerala attempt the Occupational English Test — and a significant number fall short of Grade B in one sub-test, not because their English is weak, but because OET tests very specific healthcare communication skills that are different from everyday English.

The Occupational English Test (OET) is internationally recognised and administered by the Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment Trust (CBLA) — a joint venture between Cambridge English Language Assessment and Box Hill Institute, Australia. OET is recognised by healthcare regulators and employers in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Dubai, Singapore, and 45+ other countries.

Unlike IELTS or PTE, OET tests your ability to communicate in real healthcare settings. The reading passages are healthcare texts. The writing task is a profession-specific referral or discharge letter based on actual case notes. The speaking test is a clinical role-play simulating a patient consultation.

For healthcare professionals from Kerala, OET is increasingly the preferred choice — your medical vocabulary, understanding of patient communication, and familiarity with clinical scenarios are a direct advantage.

Exam Structure

OET Exam Structure

Know exactly what each sub-test demands — and how our trainers prepare you for every challenge.

Listening

Part A: Two healthcare consultations — take notes as you listen to a health professional and patient. Part B: Six short workplace recordings (ward briefings, announcements) with MCQs. Part C: Two longer presentations by healthcare professionals with MCQs.

Reading

Part A (Expeditious): Four short healthcare texts — drug information leaflets, clinical guidelines, patient care protocols — with 20 questions requiring you to locate specific information across all four texts simultaneously. Part B (Careful): Two longer healthcare passages with 16 detailed comprehension questions.

Writing

You are given a set of case notes — patient history, test results, treatment record — and asked to write a profession-specific letter addressed to another health professional. Marked on six criteria: Purpose, Content, Conciseness and Clarity, Genre and Style, Organisation and Layout, and Language.

Speaking

Two role-plays of ~5 minutes each. You play a healthcare professional; the interlocutor plays a patient or carer. Assessed on 9 criteria: Linguistic (intelligibility, fluency, grammar) AND Clinical Communication (relationship building, understanding patient's perspective, information gathering).

Our Method

Our Training Approach — All 4 Skills

Train Your Ear for Every Accent

The biggest challenge for most candidates from Kerala is accent unfamiliarity. The IELTS Listening test uses recordings from British, Australian, American, New Zealand, and Canadian speakers.

We train structured note-taking — identifying keywords before the recording begins, using abbreviations, and avoiding common distractor traps.

image

Master Time Management

The 60-minute Reading section is where many students lose marks by reading every word. Our training teaches skimming (reading for general idea) and scanning (locating specific information quickly).

We place particular focus on True/False/Not Given questions and handling dense academic vocabulary effectively.

image

Structured, Specific, Task-Responsive

The two most common errors: Task 1 responses detailing numbers without identifying trends, and Task 2 essays drifting off-topic.

Our writing training uses a structured framework. Every student's writing is reviewed individually with written feedback on Task Achievement, Coherence, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range.

image

Fluency, Range, and Confidence

Common issues: long pauses, overuse of filler words, and short answers in Part 3.

Our Speaking training includes daily one-on-one practice, weekly full mock Speaking test recordings, and dedicated vocabulary sessions covering 50 high-frequency conversational topics.

Grade B (score 350+) in all four sub-tests — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. You must achieve Grade B in each individually; an average is not sufficient for NMC or GMC registration.

Most of our students are fully prepared in 8–12 weeks with consistent daily practice. Re-takers who need to improve a specific sub-test typically achieve their target in 4–6 weeks through our crash course.

Yes. OET at Home is available and the result is recognised identically to a test centre result. Our coaching includes practice specifically calibrated for the OET at Home speaking and listening formats.

Yes — OET allows you to retake individual sub-tests. If you pass 3 and fail 1, you only resit the one. Results are valid for 2 years and can be combined within that window. Our crash course is specifically designed for targeted sub-test improvement.

For most nurses from Kerala, OET is the preferred choice. The writing task tests clinical letter writing — directly aligned with your nursing experience. The speaking test is a clinical role-play rather than a general conversation. Your healthcare background is an active advantage in OET.
