The Complete NMC Registration Process, Made Simple

Step 1

Document Preparation

Gather all required documents — passport, nursing degree certificate, INC/KNMC registration, Good Standing Certificate, and Police Clearance Certificate — before creating your NMC account.

Step 2

NMC Account & Application

Register on the NMC Sheryan online portal. Select "Joining the Register" → "Register as a nurse". Upload all documents, verify your email, and submit your eligibility application.

Step 3

Evaluation & Verification

Pay the NMC evaluation fee (£140). Your home nursing council verifies your registration directly with the NMC. Once confirmed, your portal shows "Third Party Verification Completed."

Step 4

CBT Exam in India

Complete Part 1 of the NMC Test of Competence — a theory-based exam taken at a Pearson VUE centre in India. Includes Part A (15 numeracy questions) and Part B (100 clinical MCQs).

Step 5

Decision Letter

Submit remaining documents (English test result, PCC, Good Standing, GP medical certificate). The NMC issues your Decision Letter — your authorisation to apply for UK nursing jobs.

Step 6

Job Offer & CoS

Apply for nursing roles with NHS Trusts or Home Office-approved employers. Receive a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS). Minimum salary: £25,000/year on NHS Agenda for Change pay scales.

Step 7

Apply online via UK Visas and Immigration using your CoS, NMC Decision Letter, English language result, PCC, and TB test certificate. Visa decision typically within 3–6 weeks.

Step 8

OSCE in UK

Complete Part 2 of the NMC Test of Competence — a 10-station hands-on practical exam at an approved UK test centre. Sit within 12 weeks of your employment start date.

Step 9

NMC PIN — UK Nurse

After passing the OSCE and final NMC verification, receive your NMC PIN — your proof of full registration, authorising you to practise independently across all UK healthcare settings.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: What is the NMC and why is registration mandatory for nurses in the UK?
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the official regulatory body for all nurses and midwives practising in the United Kingdom. Without NMC registration, it is illegal to work as a nurse in the UK. The NMC sets the professional standards every nurse must meet — regardless of where they trained — to ensure patient safety across all NHS and private healthcare settings.
Q2: Can I take the CBT exam from India without travelling to the UK?
Yes. The CBT is administered by Pearson VUE at authorised test centres across India. You complete this major milestone before leaving home — and with your CBT result, you become a much stronger candidate to UK employers and can begin applying for NHS roles before you travel.
Q3: Do I need a job offer before starting my NMC registration?
No. You can complete your OET/IELTS exam, create your NMC account, submit your documents, pay the evaluation fee, and sit the CBT — all from India, without a job offer. A job offer is only required before your visa application and before sitting the OSCE in the UK.
Q4: What English language test do I need for NMC registration — OET or IELTS?
The NMC accepts either OET or IELTS Academic. For OET, you need a minimum Grade B in Reading, Listening, and Speaking, and Grade C+ in Writing. For IELTS Academic, you need a minimum of 7.0 in Reading, Listening, and Speaking, and 6.5 in Writing. OET is specifically designed for healthcare professionals and is widely recommended for nurses. Graduate Training Academy offers expert coaching for both.
Q5: What is the Health and Care Worker visa?
The Health and Care Worker visa is the UK immigration route for internationally qualified nurses coming to work in the NHS. It offers a lower application fee than the standard Skilled Worker visa and is exempt from the Immigration Health Surcharge. It is granted for up to 5 years initially. After 5 years, nurses are eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — permanent UK residency.
Q6: How long does the full NMC registration process take from India?
The total process — from NMC account creation to receiving your NMC PIN — typically takes 6 to 12 months. The timeline depends on document verification, English test preparation, CBT exam scheduling, visa processing, and OSCE availability after arrival. Starting your document preparation and OET/IELTS coaching early is the most effective way to reduce your overall timeline.
Q7: Can my family come with me to the UK?
Yes. The Health and Care Worker visa allows your spouse and dependent children to join you in the UK as dependants. They can work and access NHS healthcare during their stay, and may also be eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain after 5 years of continuous residence.
Q8: What is the OSCE and when is it taken?
The OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) is Part 2 of the NMC Test of Competence — a hands-on practical exam conducted at an approved UK test centre after you arrive with a job offer. It has 10 clinical stations simulating real NHS scenarios. You must sit your first attempt within 12 weeks of your employment start date. Results are published within 5 working days. Maximum 3 attempts.
